Frankfurt Buchmesse 2025 (Germany)

The Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse) is the world’s largest and most influential book fair, held every October in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Now in its 77th edition, the fair takes place this year from 15 to 19 October 2025.
Beyond being a major cultural celebration, the fair is first and foremost a professional hub for the global publishing industry. Publishers, literary agents, booksellers, translators, authors and media professionals from all over the world gather in Frankfurt to connect, network and do business.

The organisers report around 4,350 exhibitors and visitors from over 90 countries for the 2025 edition. Last year’s fair welcomed more than 230,000 visitors and over 4,300 exhibitors. With similar or even higher attendance expected this year, Frankfurt confirms its position as a leading international event for the book industry.

A Marketplace for Rights and Licensing.

One of the core functions of the Frankfurt Book Fair is its role as a global trading hub for publishing rights and licences. Every year, thousands of publishing professionals — including publishers, literary agents, scouts, translators and media producers — gather in Frankfurt to negotiate and sign international deals.

The most common transactions involve translation rights, allowing a book to be published in other languages and territories. Many deals also cover international editions or adaptation rights for formats such as film, TV, theatre, audiobooks, podcasts or digital platforms.

Thanks to its unmatched international reach, Frankfurt remains the key meeting point for the global book industry: rights negotiations often start months before the fair and are finalised during these intense five days.

For literary agencies and publishers, the fair is a strategic opportunity to showcase titles to the world, build new partnerships and expand the reach of their authors and catalogues.

Special events and new features.

The 2025 programme features a rich calendar of professional and public events. Among the highlights:

  • The Frankfurt Kids Conference on 15 October, themed “Children’s Books in a Fragile World”, with British illustrator Axel Scheffler (The Gruffalo) as keynote speaker.

  • The Frankfurt Rights Meeting, focusing on AI in publishing, digital licensing, and global market trends, with speakers including Fatimah Abbas and Chantal Restivo-Alessi.

  • A growing Book-to-Screen section dedicated to adaptations of literary works for film and television.

  • Expanded spaces and activities for the general public, with author meetings, panel discussions and cross-media events.

This year’s Guest of Honour is the Philippines, under the theme “The imagination peoples the air.” The programme highlights the country’s rich storytelling traditions, linguistic and cultural diversity, and growing literary presence on the international stage. A dedicated pavilion hosts events, author talks, performances and showcases of Filipino literature and art.

The Frankfurt Book Fair continues to be a powerful bridge between cultures, markets and stories. For literary agencies and publishers, it represents not only a moment of visibility but also a concrete chance to open new doors for authors and to bring books to readers across the globe.
